Bar Refaeli Talks Escada Fragrance, Affinity For Guys In Baggy Jeans

Posted by andre with No Comments

Model and Sports Illustrated cover girl Bar Refaeli has signed on as the new face of Escada‘s latest fragrance, Especially Escada — a sparkling rose scent with hints of Ylang Ylang and Ambrette seeds. “When they [Escada] first told me about what the fragrance represented, they said things like, ‘spontaneous, free-spirited, elegant, feminine, soft’ and all these things that I feel like I’m very much about and love in life,” says Refaeli. “And then I smelled it and it actually smelled like it.” We caught up with the model after the Especially Escada launch to discuss the fragrance, the workout plan that whips her into swimsuit-season shape and why she’s anti-skinny jeans on guys.

What’s the one product you always have in your bag?
Hand lotion. There’s an Israeli brand called Ahava.

What about a go-to lipstick?
Right now, I’m using a Clinique balm with a little tint. It moisturizes your lips with a little color. I don’t like lipsticks, but I like tints.

Is there any beauty advice your mom gave you growing up that you did follow and also some that you didn’t follow?
It’s not advice, but my mom is very known for her blue liner, she loves to wear really bright, blue eyeliner. I think now, more people are trying it, but she’s been doing that forever. I’ve started to put blue liner inside my eye; it’s unnoticeable, but it really give a pop. I like it, it’s fun.

So I know that you love the new Especially Escada, but is there a scent or smell that you love?
Laundry, for sure. I’m obsessed, ask all my friends. The first thing I do when I come home is wash everything so it smells like me. And I always try to find the newest, best detergents. Obsessed, it’s awful.

Who are your personal beauty icons from the past or today?
Well first of all, my mom. Because my mom always has a big smile on her face and I think that really makes a woman beautiful. It doesn’t matter what she has on her face, like makeup. I like Cameron Diaz, I like how she’s always sweet with her makeup. She never goes crazy, just like pink-y tints, I love that. I like Jennifer Aniston, I like all those girls that are simple. Very laid-back, the girl-next-door, sweet, always with a smile on their face and just go soft.

Can you tell me a little about how you get ready for swimsuit shoots? Does it take weeks or are you always exercising in preparation?
It depends on the time during the year. I try to exercise a lot just because I love it, I really, really love it. So when I spend a lot of time in Israel, I like to do TRX. It’s a new workout, it’s unbelievable. But when I travel, I don’t work out. It’s too tiring and it’s too hard. Before a shoot, well let’s see, you know what? From traveling so much and being on planes, I try to keep healthy at all times so it’s not always before a shoot. I try to keep my body adjusted and normal and feeling like you can take it, it has to be healthy. So I eat junk food, but when I’m craving it, not just because it’s there.

Are there any tips or tricks that you picked up on set during shoots? Any advice that you learned from other models?
I don’t think there are any secrets, but eating healthy and working out. I wish there were, I wish there were a magic pill but really, it’s doing that. And moderation, it’s all in moderation. Don’t not eat dessert ever, have it, but then relax on it. Have it when you’re craving it, but then eat healthy.

What do you think is sexy on a woman, and what do you think is sexy on a man?
Same answer for both: confidence. I feel like when a woman or a man carries themselves with elegance and confidence and are happy with who they are, that’s very, very sexy to me.

What’s not sexy?
Lack of confidence? (laughs)

What about style-wise, what’s unappealing on a man?
I don’t like men that try too hard, I like men that are basic. You know, like jeans and a t-shirt. And you can also make it cool, like V-neck over crew neck. I like very, very simple. I actually like baggy jeans on guys rather than the skinny ones. I like guys that are comfortable and manly.

Last question. What’s one thing that people don’t know about you?
I don’t know, I’ll have to get a list of what people do know about me. Maybe they don’t know that I’m very very goofy. Like around my friends, I’m always doing something stupid, I’m the first one up for an adventure. I like to hang out with the guys more than the girls. I’m a guy’s girl.

Bar Refaeli for Vogue Italy

In the career of any famous model there’s a moment which represents the height of success: your image is immediately recognized as a symbol, the icon of an absolute aesthetic canon. Bar Refaeli, an Israeli model, reached this enviable goal in 2009, when she was chosen as the cover girl of the famous Sports Illustrated‘s Swimsuit Issue.

Statuesque body, blonde hair and blue eyes, she appeared on many tabloids at the time of her love story with Leonardo Di Caprio, but she’s been able to manage her image with intelligence, thus reinforcing her status as one of the most loved top models.

“I come from a town outside of Tel Aviv. I was brought up with animals and horses and a big land of grass. Very small house – we’re four children“, she says. “I grew up climbing on trees, running on the grass, with water.“
She started to work as a model in tv commercials when she was a child; the turning point arrived when she was 15: after removing the braces she had been wearing for three years, she was ready to make her debut in the world of fashion. Many catwalks followed her first fashion show, along with advertising campaigns, covers of important fashion magazines and appearances in popular tv programs, such as MTV House of Style and Germany’s Next Top Model.

She never fails to impress on the red carpet: she loves wearing statement evening dresses, especially if they’re creations by Armani, Pucci, Marchesa and Cavalli. She says her style is “always feminine, classy, not too crazy“; it’s not a coincidence if she sees herself as a “jean-and-t-shirt girl”, like Cindy Crawford and Jennifer Aniston, two of her style icons, along with Kate Moss (“everything she puts always looks amazing but effortless“).

Fashion is her world and Bar appreciates the playful side of it: “It’s a game, it’s a change of attitude, it’s a change of character sometimes.“
Passionate shoe collector (she owns about 100 pairs), she never travels without “a pair of leggings for the travel, because I need to be comfortable; 20 white t-shirts; one little black dress; a pair of high heels; big, big, big scarf for the flight, because it’s always cold. I always carry the Lanvin flats because they go with everything, they’re a very good solution for everything.”

Thanks to her experience in the modeling world – she’s worked with Greg Kadel, Mario Sorrenti, Mario Testino, Mert & Marcus – she has learnt the importance of being “nice to everyone. There’s so much room in the fashion industry for all kinds of girls – more skinny, the less skinny, the more beautiful, the more weird-looking – so there’s room for everyone. I think the ones that really make it are the ones it’s really fun to work with. They treat everyone nicely and always with respect. I think it’s true for every kind of life, but also in modeling.”

She’s convinced that “less is always more” and that feeling comfortable in your own skin is fundamental: “You have to have a smile on your face, a good attitude and feel comfortable with the way you care of yourself, otherwise nothing will look good.”

Bar Refaeli Takes on Perfume (& Underwear)

Posted by andre with No Comments

Bar Refaeli for Undeez

After a long hiatus, Escada’s finally launching another fragrance—and everything’s coming up roses. Literally. Especially Escada, which just premiered exclusively at Sephora, is a rose-based scent with additional notes of musk, ylang ylang, and sparkling pear. Besides smelling pretty great, it also has the delightful Bar Refaeli as its spokesmodel. Earlier today, we sat down with the Israeli beauty to get her thoughts on the perfume—and her new undergarment company.

ELLE: What was it like shooting the ad campaign for the fragrance?
Bar Refaeli: It was shot in a beautiful French garden with the well-known double “e” for Especially Escada. There are lots of roses in the photo because the fragrance has this very rare rose in it—it’s hard to find and smells very unique. They wanted the campaign to have a lively, free-spirited, easygoing feel because that’s exactly how the fragrance is. It’s not heavy, not too sweet—just very light and fresh.

ELLE: So we’re assuming the dress you’re wearing in the photo is Escada…
BR: Yes, they made an Especially Escada dress—it was pink and it was so cute! I felt really girly and pretty in it. But it was still very elegant; it wasn’t too cheesy or childish.

ELLE: How is the dress similar or different from your usual style?
BR: I don’t have a specific style—the only thing specific that I require of my clothes is that they’re comfortable. Most of the time I just wear a t-shirt and jeans, but I love fashion and I do like to mix things up. I’ll go from an edgy look with a motorcycle jacket and leather pants to a soft, elegant dress with heels.

ELLE: What’s your favorite thing about Especially Escada?
BR: It’s versatile, so you can wear it for both day and night. I like wearing the same perfume all the time because that way people associate that smell with you and it becomes your signature scent. It’s actually really funny, though, because I got a few bottles of Especially Escada and gave them to my four best friends and mom. So now we’ll enter a room together and all smell like roses. No one has their own scent anymore. Everywhere I go, I smell me!

ELLE: What’s up next for you? Are there any projects you’re working on?
BR: I’m opening an online company called Undeez. The website, undeez.com, launches in November and on it you’ll be able to buy clothes—underwear, socks, and t-shirts for men and women—in very soft, basic fabrics. I started the site with a friend because when I like a pair of underwear, I’ll get 30 pairs of it in the same color. But I don’t have time to go buy underwear all the time. And I had boyfriends who were the same way—they never had time to go buy socks and underwear, that’s for sure!—so this website is great because after subscribing, you get these necessities sent directly to you each month.
